What is the difference between steam, shampoo and extraction?
Steam cleaning applies water vapour and heat. Shampooing describes cleaning with a detergent, but does not tell you how that detergent is removed. Spray extraction applies a cleaning solution to suitable fabric and uses suction to recover liquid and loosened soil. A service may combine steps, so these labels are not always three competing packages.
For a fabric sofa in a Makati condo, start with the furniture manufacturer's permitted cleaning method. Then ask the cleaner to explain the treatment and recovery steps. The most powerful machine is of little use if its process is wrong for your sofa.
| Service description | What it usually describes | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Steam cleaning | A heat-based process, or sometimes a loose name for extraction | Do you mean actual steam or a spray extractor? |
| Sofa shampoo | Use of detergent on upholstery | How will the loosened dirt and detergent be removed? |
| Spray extraction | Application and suction recovery of liquid | Is it approved for this fabric and furniture construction? |
| Dry vacuuming | Removal of loose debris | Is this the whole service or preparation for further cleaning? |
Why “steam cleaning” needs a follow-up question
People often use the word steam for any professional machine that cleans a sofa. Before comparing two quotes, find out whether both companies mean the same thing. One might use a steam appliance; the other might apply warm cleaning solution and extract it.
These are different operations. Heat can be part of a suitable process, but the word steam does not establish that embedded soil has been recovered. Nor does it establish that every cushion, arm and back panel is included. Ask what equipment touches the fabric, what is applied and where the dirty liquid goes.
Do not buy an upholstery service on an unqualified claim that heat makes the furniture sterile. A cleaning description is not evidence of a validated disinfection process. If that is your reason for booking, ask for the exact product or process, its intended use and its limitations before deciding.
Shampoo is only part of the explanation
A detergent helps release particular soils from a compatible textile. The choice depends on what the fabric permits and what is on it. A greasy armrest, a spilled drink and loose crumbs are not the same cleaning problem.
A quotation that says “shampoo included” still leaves several questions unanswered. Does the cleaner vacuum first? Is a local stain assessed separately? Is solution extracted? How is moisture controlled? You need those answers to compare the work, rather than just compare the names of products.
More foam is not a useful quality measure. Neither is a stronger smell after the visit. Ask the cleaner what the item should feel like once dry and what to do if a treated area feels sticky or looks different. Reporting that observation is more useful than judging the job from a fragrance while the furniture is still damp.
What extraction adds, and where it stops
In its upholstery-care guide, Kärcher describes spray extraction as applying water and detergent, then recovering them with the dirt. That explains the mechanism; it does not approve the method for every sofa.
Extraction also does not rebuild fabric, replace cushion foam or reverse colour loss. A clean seat can still have a pale patch where the original colour has changed. A sagging cushion remains a cushion-repair problem. Those distinctions should be discussed before the work, while you can still decide whether cleaning is worth booking.
At CLB Makati, we check the material, extract suitable upholstery and use an air mover to help it dry. The cleaning-process page explains the sequence. An air mover helps drying; it is not a promise that every item will be ready at the same hour.
The care label can rule a method out
Do not assume that a W code gives permission to put any amount of water through the sofa. A maker may permit a water-based spot product while restricting extraction. For example, La-Z-Boy's care instructions specifically restrict hot-water extraction and steam cleaning for its W-coded guidance. That is a reason to read the complete instructions for your own model.
If the label is missing, send the brand, model and any care booklet you have. A fabric photograph is useful for the conversation but cannot prove every property of the upholstery or what lies under it. Our care-code guide covers W, S, W-S and X in more detail.
A zip on a cushion is another detail that is easy to misread. It may allow assembly rather than washing. Removing and laundering a cover needs its own permission from the manufacturer.
Five questions that make quotes comparable
- Which method is suitable for the instructions on this furniture?
- Which surfaces and loose cushions are included?
- How do you remove loose dirt before applying a liquid?
- How are solution and moisture recovered, and what drying arrangements are needed?
- Which existing marks or damage may remain afterwards?
Send the same full-sofa photograph, label and stain close-ups to each provider. Mention previous home treatments. Without that information, two apparently different prices may simply describe different work.
In a condo, include building access requirements and when you need the room again. Allow time for drying after the cleaning visit. Our drying guide explains how to plan that gap without guessing from the clock.
Questions before choosing a method
Is extraction better than steam for every sofa?
No. Suitability comes first. An extractor cannot make a water-sensitive construction suitable for wet cleaning. For a compatible item, ask what each proposed process will remove, what remains uncertain and how the item will be dried.
Can a wet vacuum do the same job?
A machine that picks up liquid does not necessarily spray a controlled solution. Check its intended functions. You still need to check the fabric instructions, choose a suitable product and assess the stain before using it.
What should I book with CLB?
Start with a photo-based enquiry through our Makati sofa-cleaning service. Include the label and your main concern. We can discuss the appropriate scope before you choose a date, rather than making you select a machine name from a menu.
